Top 10 Book Series Your Boys Will Love

I first fell in love with books in middle school when I would spend hours upon hours pouring over the Christy Miller series, Nancy Drew mysteries, and Saddle Club books…reading at night by flashlight with the covers pulled up over my head or high up in one of the apple trees that lined our property growing up. Stories were hugely impactful in spurring on many of my early passions for gymnastics, ballet, horseback riding, ice skating, soccer, and writing, as well as shaping my character and convictions.

But books and boys? Well, sometimes that can be a hard combo. As moms, we know the benefits of reading are immeasurable–readers make writers, communicators, thinkers. Reading enriches a child’s worldview, expands their vocabulary, and develops character. Good books spark the imagination, fuel creative play, and cultivate compassion. They give kids the opportunity to “walk in another’s shoes for a day” gaining valuable perspective in our me-centric society. It can teach them about other cultures, time periods, and ways of life.

In addition, with all the technological stimuli in today’s world, reading a real-bound book can even reduce stress and improve concentration–an indispensable asset to adults and children alike.

But as moms, we can know all the reasons why our kids should read, but what if your son hates reading? What if it is a constant battle to get him to open a book? Let me preface this by saying that a strong foundation in phonics is essential for a child to enjoy reading, but if your child CAN read and simply DOESN’T WANT TO, chances are, they just haven’t been introduced to the right books.

I still remember the books that hooked each of my kids on to reading. For Emma it was in first grade with Jigsaw Jones Mysteries, for Ashton it was the Wild Robot in second grade, and for Parker it was the Boxcar Children. If you have a boy that hates to read, chances are, he just hasn’t found stories he loves. I’m sharing my 10-year-old boys’ top 10 Book Series, in hopes that a few of these will be the spark that ignites a fire for reading in your child.

1 | Peter Nimble Adventures

2 | Mysterious Benedict Society

3 | Chronicles of Narnia

4 | The 39 Clues

5 | Explorer Academy

6 | Percy Jackson

7 | The Underland Chronicles

8 | The Green Ember

9 | City Spies

10 | Framed

I would recommend these books for ages 9 and up. As always, use your discretion as a parent. Kids are unique in that some are ready for certain themes while others may never be…and that is just fine. There is no one size fits all approach to children. So there are ten of our favorites, now I’d love to hear yours!!
